How to use Video Frame Extractor
Extract a controlled set of still images from a video for inspection or annotation. Choose the time range and sampling interval to capture useful variation while avoiding thousands of nearly identical neighboring frames.
Prepare, run, and review
- Upload a supported video and inspect the reported duration. Enter the start and end times in seconds; an end value of zero uses the video's end.
- Choose every N seconds for time-based sampling, or every N frames for frame-based sampling. These settings are different, especially when frame rates vary.
- Select JPG, PNG, or WebP and a maximum frame count within the limit shown for your account. Use the estimate as a planning aid; actual decoded output can differ around boundaries or unusual timestamps.
- Run the extraction and download the resulting ZIP. Inspect the beginning, middle, and end of the sample before adding it to a training dataset.
Plan a manageable annotation batch
Selected range: 10 to 30 seconds
Interval: every 2 seconds
Approximate sample positions: 10, 12, 14, …, 28 seconds
Planning estimate: about 10 framesThe 20-second interval divided by a two-second sampling period gives about ten frames. This is a planning estimate, not a promise of exact endpoint inclusion. Decoding, source timestamps, and the configured maximum can affect the delivered count. Check the output rather than assuming every planned instant exists in the source.
Limits and common mistakes
- Frame extraction does not automatically label the images or prove that they cover the task's difficult conditions.
- For machine learning, keep related frames from the same recording together when creating independent train and test splits. Random neighboring-frame splits can inflate evaluation scores.
- PNG preserves encoded pixel values losslessly but can produce larger files than JPEG. Choose a format that matches your storage and quality requirements.
- If processing fails, check the selected range and whether the source video decodes normally. A familiar filename extension does not guarantee a supported internal codec.
Is every 30 frames always the same as every one second?
Only under appropriate constant-frame-rate conditions, such as a true 30-frame-per-second stream. Variable rates and timestamps can make the two sampling methods differ.
