How to use Background Remover
Estimate the main foreground region in a still image and export it as a transparent PNG. This can help prepare product images, illustrations, or presentation assets. The model estimates a mask; fine hair, transparent objects, and low-contrast boundaries may need additional review.
Prepare, run, and review
- Upload a supported image with a reasonably clear main subject. Inspect orientation and choose an original with enough detail around the subject's edges.
- Run background removal. The current model processes a reduced-resolution representation and scales its estimated alpha mask back to the image size.
- Download background_removed.png. Open it over both light and dark backgrounds to inspect halos, holes, missed foreground, and remaining background.
- Keep the result in a format that preserves transparency. If a later editor saves it as JPEG, the alpha channel will not be retained.
Understand transparent output
RGB channels: foreground color information
Alpha channel: opacity information
Alpha 0: fully transparent
Alpha 255: fully opaque in an eight-bit alpha channelIntermediate alpha values represent partial opacity, which can soften an edge. A preview with a white background does not by itself prove that transparency is missing; some viewers place transparent images on white. Check in a viewer that displays a checkerboard or lets you change the background.
Limits and common mistakes
- The model can retain unwanted objects, erase parts of the intended subject, or struggle when foreground and background look similar.
- Very fine detail may be lost because mask estimation uses a reduced image. A large final PNG does not guarantee that every edge was estimated at full resolution.
- The initial request may include model initialization if the service has not loaded it yet. If the service reports an unavailable model, retry only after the reported availability issue is resolved.
- The result is a generated foreground estimate, not a reviewed ground-truth segmentation label. Inspect and correct it before using it as training annotation.
Why should I inspect the cutout on both a light and a dark background?
Different backgrounds reveal different halos and edge contamination. A boundary that looks clean on white can still show unwanted bright pixels on black.
