A practical question

A predicted tree mask overlaps most of the annotated canopy but misses several thin branches. Its intersection-over-union score may still look respectable. Does that score capture the error we care about?

02

The useful idea

Mask overlap compares shared pixels with the total pixels covered by either mask. Boundary comparisons focus on how closely outlines match. Both depend on annotation quality and any matching tolerance. A large easy interior can dominate overlap while small edges remain wrong.

03

Work through the example

Show the prediction and reference over the photograph, then inspect the thin branches separately. If the downstream task is estimating total shade, one kind of error may matter more than if the task is avoiding a wire that crosses a branch. A canopy mask can achieve good area overlap while missing a few long, thin branches. If the city only estimates broad shade, that omission may matter differently than if it checks clearance near a wire. Compare the reference and prediction at the native image scale, then inspect both area overlap and boundary errors. State which downstream decision the metric supports. A single global score should not hide the exact branches that prompted the inspection. Use this case to test your understanding: Compare area overlap with boundary errors around branches near a wire. Here is the limitation to watch for: A single overlap value can hide a small but important missed region. The answer follows from that evidence: Intersection-over-union compares overlapping area, while boundary measures emphasize edge alignment. An overlap score can be high because most of the canopy is easy. Enlarge the missed thin branch near the wire and ask whether that error changes the safety decision. Report both the broad score and the local failure.

Limits and next step

Report the chosen metric alongside examples. Next, we'll audit the human masks before blaming every disagreement on the model.

Worked example

Compare area overlap with boundary errors around branches near a wire.

Knowledge check

Quick check: test your understanding

Try it yourself: Consider this case: Compare area overlap with boundary errors around branches near a wire. Explain how you would check the result. In your answer, address this limitation: A single overlap value can hide a small but important missed region.

Check the reasoning

Intersection-over-union compares overlapping area, while boundary measures emphasize edge alignment. A single overlap value can hide a small but important missed region.

What is the main idea behind measure mask overlap and boundary quality?

Intersection-over-union compares overlapping area, while boundary measures emphasize edge alignment.

How is it used in the example?

Compare area overlap with boundary errors around branches near a wire.

What limitation should be checked?

A single overlap value can hide a small but important missed region.

Mask overlap compares shared pixels with the total pixels covered by either mask. Boundary comparisons focus on how closely outlines match. Both depend on annotation quality and any matching tolerance. A large easy interior can dominate overlap while small edges remain wrong.

Show the prediction and reference over the photograph, then inspect the thin branches separately.
